Do you have ideas for making Madison a safer city for youth and residents of all ages?

If so, you’re invited to apply to advise Chief Barnes on issues affecting youth in Madison.

Submit the form below by Friday, November 29, to be considered

Chief Barnes is seeking youth to be a part of his Youth Advisory Board throughout the 2024-25 school year. This is a space to share your thoughts and ideas on policing priorities and concerns in Madison. This is an important opportunity for Chief Barnes to engage in meaningful conversations with young people, especially historically marginalized youth, and to empower young individuals to actively participate in molding the future of law enforcement in Madison.

What is the Youth Advisory Board commitment and compensation?

A total of 18 young people representing neighborhoods throughout Madison will meet monthly with Chief Barnes to discuss community safety issues, provide feedback, learn, and ensure your needs and expectations of policing are met. This includes up to nine two-hour in-person evening meetings throughout the school year, as well as occasional community events. Youth Advisory Board members will be paid $50.00 per meeting.

Who is invited to apply, and what is the timeline?

One to two high school students, as well as alternates, from Madison’s public and private high schools will be selected to join the Youth Advisory Board. Applications will be reviewed in November, and you will be notified soon after if you are selected. Selected students will sign an agreement form, and parents and guardians will also have a form to sign. Other details, including meeting locations and times, will be discussed once all students are selected.

Apply by Friday, November 29
