Brunch for Peace at Tree Lane Apartments
The "Brunch for Peace," organized by our West MPD District's Community Policing Advisory Board at Tree Lane Apartments (built to serve homeless families, many fleeing domestic violence), brought together residents, the Madison Police Department, Madison Reading Project, Focused Interruption, Madison Public Library, NAMI Dane County, Madison Metropolitan School District, Urban League of Greater Madison, and community leaders for a morning of relationship building and conversation.
The gathering brought to light important issues that residents are seeking support with, such as after-school child care, tutoring in reading and math, more opportunities for youth in the area, criminal record expungement, support for elderly residents raising grandchildren, financial planning, and family planning.
Advisors have set in motion next steps, involving city alders, nonprofits, and school district resources to work toward addressing these needs. The Brunch for Peace was the first in what we hope will be ongoing opportunities to hear from and collaborate with the residents, management, and onsite organizations at Tree Lane Apartments.
Thank you so much to our volunteer servers Pia Kinney-James, Bonnie Roe, and Kim Richman, and to Kenyatta Moore from Sankofa Behavioral & Community Health and Lutheran Social Services' Samantha Sobrevilla. Our Advisors could not have done this without generous donations from Hy-Vee, Inc., Dunkin', and the Madison chapter of the Knights of Columbus.
